Stiff neck, causes, symptoms and treatments

The neck is the most crucial part of the human body as it plays a coordinating role between the brain and other body parts. The human vertebral column starts from the neck and runs at the end of the backbone. In a way, the neck plays a pivotal role in the human body. The neck is the junction between the brain and body, so there are many bones, ligaments, and muscles in the neck that support the head and help move the neck and head. Neck helps to rotate the head. However, one can experience severe pain due to a stiff neck.

Mobility difficulties in the head can occur when the neck has severe pain or neck stiffness. There are multiple causes of neck stiffness. In most cases, neck stiffness occurs due to muscle strain or stress; any injury on the neck or vertebrate, inflammation, or abnormality can lead to a stiff neck. Sleeping stiff neck depends upon on many reasons. Inadequate or wrong sleeping posture, type of pillow you use while sleeping, and other reasons that have been discussed below:

One can suffer a stiff neck while sleeping due to inadequate or wrong posture of sleeping for a long time. This poor or awkward angle can stretch or stress the muscles, joints, and ligaments.

Sudden movement while sleeping can also induce stress or strain the muscles that lead to neck pain or stiff neck.

Proper exercise will reduce the stiff neck and strengthen your neck muscles. Neck pain exercise feels better, and neck muscles relax with light exercise.

There are some exercises given below that will relieve pain around your neck and relax the muscles.

  • While stiff neck, one must sit up straight on a chair, keep the body relaxed.
  • Move your head forward down towards your chest and backward towards the sky. Repeat this motion many times to relax your neck muscles.
  • Move your head right down towards your right shoulder and then left towards the left shoulder; this will improve the neck pain.

Neck Extension or Backward bending:

In neck extension, move your head towards your backbone while looking up towards the sky. By doing this, statically keep your shoulder and back. Try to hold this posture of extension for 5 seconds then return the head to the neutral position.

Neck Flexion or Forward movement:

Neck flexion exercise for 5 seconds can also improve the condition of a stiff neck. In this exercise, move your neck towards your chest while Your head on the downward.

Tilt your neck side to side:

In this exercise, tilt the head right side towards the right shoulder so that your right shoulder touches your ear. While doing this stretch exercise, keep your shoulder and back static and neck flexes laterally to the right side. Then repeat this exercise by tilting your head on right in the same way. This exercise for 5 seconds will improve the neck stiff.

Neck rotation or turning side to side:

Move your head to the left while keeping your back straight and shoulder in a static position. Once head turned left to its limit, hold this posture for 5 seconds and then move your head on the neutral position. Repeat this on the right side for 5 seconds. This head rotating movement can aid in alleviating neck pain or neck stiffness.

5: Sever neck stiff can also demand medical attention:

Usually, a stiff neck can be cured with home remedies and exercises. However, it can prolong and severe. So, in that case, you can visit a doctor or hospital.

Neck stiff with severe headache, fever, nausea, neck pain extends towards the arm and shoulder, weakness these are the most critical situations that demand you seek medical attention at once.

Sometimes, neck stiff usually remains for a few hours, but if it prolongs for days, you will have to get an appointment for proper medication.
